The Dark ‘n Stormy ended up being an oddly prophetic choice as twenty minutes into the bash, held on NYC’s Pier 40, a storm of biblical proportions hit Manhattan. You wouldn’t know it inside though, as the Gosling’s rum flowed freely and menswear’s elite chowed down on Hester Street Fair food. Well, you wouldn’t know it unless you looked down at the increasingly soaked floor. But the saturated surrounding didn’t seem to bother anyone, least of all the designers who finally got to show off their Gap-bound goods that will be up for grabs in-store and online starting Thursday, September 27th. The raw warehouse-style space was filled with mammoth blow-ups of the GQ x Gap collaboration’s ad campaign running in this month’s issue. Creative directed by Mr. Moore himself with the Byrd&Co. agency and the Gap, and shot by long time GQ photographer Peggy Sirota, each vignette shows off the designers’ wares in clean, Avedonesque compositions. Rendered in crisp black and white for the night, the clothes in the photos came to life courtesy of the campaign’s models… As for the party itself, the weather didn’t make a dent in the supportive turnout as BNMDA alumni like Doug Burkman, Robert Geller, Patrik Ervell, Sam Shipley and Jeff Halmos of Shipley & Halmos, Yigal Azrouel, and Steven Alan showed up along with Tyson Chandler, Penn Badgley, Theophilus London, Victoria’s Secret angel Lindsay Ellingson, and just about everyone else we know in menswear to toast this year’s six finalists. The rain finally let up towards the end of the evening but the Dark ‘n Stormy’s certainly did not. In fact, the whole night may have been the perfect GQ storm of good friends, good drinks, good food and great clothes.
