Bermuda has given us many thingsâ¦Bermuda shorts, the lure of pink sand beaches, and the Dark ‘n Stormy®. For seven generations, the Gosling family has been sharing this irresistible cocktail with visitors and residents in Bermuda. Hailed as the national drink of Bermuda, the Dark ‘n Stormy has its origins in the ginger beer factory that was run as a subsidiary of the Royal Naval Officer’s Club. The sailors soon discovered that a splash of the local Gosling’s Black Seal Rum was a great enhancement to ginger beer. The name is said to have originated when an old salt, looking through the liquid as he held his glass aloft, observed that the drink was “the colour of a cloud only a fool or dead man would sail under”. Gosling’s holds the trademark on the Dark ‘n Stormy, so making the drink with any other brand of rum is ⦠unlawful. “The Dark ‘n Stormy is enormously popular in Bermuda, and for decades visitors to the Island, especially boaters and sailors, have brought the recipe home with them to the U.S.,” observed Malcolm Gosling, owner and seventh generation rum master. So, as I travel around America, I find places that know and love the Dark ‘n Stormy, and this summer we want to share this wonderful cocktail with rum lovers all over the country.” The Dark ‘n Stormy is made using one part Gosling’s Black Seal Bermuda Rum to three parts spicy Ginger Beer, then poured over ice and garnished with a slice of lemon or lime. Super-premium Gosling’s Black Seal Bermuda Rum is made from a 150-year-old Gosling’s family recipe and uses the finest distillates aged in once-used charred American oak bourbon casks. The smooth, full flavor is the result of a careful blend of aged pot still and continuous still distillates. One imparts flavor, the other yields a subtle elegance. First exported to the US in 1980, Gosling’s Black Seal Rum is now Bermuda’s largest export. Gosling’s Brothers Ltd. is Bermuda’s oldest continuous running business. In 1806, London Wine and Spirits merchant William Gosling chartered the ship Mercury, loaded it with his son James and £10,000 worth of merchandise, and sent them off to America. After ninety one days on becalmed seas, the charter ran out and they put in at the nearest portâSt. George’s, Bermuda. In 2004 Malcolm Gosling moved to the U.S. to spearhead a major American expansion of the brand. Finally, the seventh generation of the Gosling family has completed the voyage to the United States begun in1806. At the recent San Francisco Spirits Competition, Gosling’s Black Seal Rum won a platinum medal while Gosling’s Family Reserve received a Double Gold Medal and Gosling’s Gold received a Gold Medal. Gosling’s Black Seal Bermuda Rum is available in the U.S. nationwide in three versions: 40% ABV (80 Proof), 70% ABV (140 Proof) and 75% ABV (151 Proof) and in several sizes including 1 L, 750 ml, 375 ml, 200 ml, 50 ml. Gosling’s Black Seal Bermuda Rum retails for approximately $18.00 for a 750 ml bottle/80 proof bottle.
