Bartender of the Month

Tim Walsh
Tim Walsh moved to Newport, Rhode Island 22 years ago to spend a summer with friends, fell in love with the island, and has never left. Three years into his Newport visit, Tim began tending bar at The Black Pearl which is a landmark itself in a city overflowing with Colonial and Gilded Age history.

Tim promises that a visit to Newport is not complete without sitting at the Pearl's bar on Bannister's Wharf for some of their famous New England clam chowder and a traditional Dark 'n Stormy. He looks forward to the warm weather when the outdoor patio bar opens and the town begins to hop." I serve a great number of Dark 'n Stormy's during the year, but of course nothing compares to the summer season when I have the opportunity to tempt numerous visitors looking for a recommendation of a "local" drink."

Tim is also a great resource for his customers since he works for the Convention & Visitors Bureau during the day marketing Newport as a meeting and tourist destination. "Through my job with the Convention & Visitors Bureau I have come to know Newport's history and attractions inside and out. It is a pleasure to help visitors plan their days in Newport and help them make the most of their time. Of course, I always point out that a visit to the "Sailing Capital of the World" is not complete without enjoying a sailor's rum, Gosling's. Recently, Gosling's Old Rum has grown in popularity as an after dinner drink. Customers request it in a snifter and take their time enjoying the smell and taste of this rich rum."

Last year, Tim became involved in a Manhattan restaurant and lounge, Butterfield 8. When BU8 opened just over a year ago each investor threw a grand opening party. Tim themed his opening "The Dark 'n Stormy Evening" and made sure that every invited guest enjoyed the traditional Gosling's cocktail. Tim commented, "Gosling's went above and beyond and supplied me with hats and mugs to pass out as gifts. They were a huge hit!"

On your next trip to Newport be sure to visit Tim at The Black Pearl and enjoy some clam chowda' and a traditional Dark 'n Stormy.
